Adopt a fish program

The Fergus Market owners & managers have been working with FOGR members Doug, Ken and Terry regarding establishing a very public display of what FOGR does. Within in this booth we also are trial running the Adopt the Fish Program. We now have 300 hundred or so baby browns growing in a glass tank for all to see - make sure you check this out! We want to raise these fish all summer and be ready to put them into the Grand this Fall.

We are hoping that the community residents,or visitors sponsor a trout at $10 each, and allow them to put a trout into the Grand themselves on a Adopt a Trout Stocking Day. A tentative date is September 12, 1998.

Black Creek Rehabilitation Project

We have received a Grant from the MNR for this project. We must submit and complete a formal plan.

Terry Ryckman, Ken Collins and Dr. Ian Martin are working with Shawn Geddes to establish a working plan for reconstructing the main channel of Black creek from the Grand river up to County Rd. #18. We hope that this rehab will allow easier negotiation of adult browns on their fall spawning migration. This will be a weekend job - full of rock rolling and stream improvement techniques. Wanted Chairperson For Swan Creek

The area between Road #21 and the Grand river is needing help. We need a person to undertake the Chair position of this project. There is enormous potential for this stream to help supplement our natural reproductive capabilities of this river.

Grand Opportunities 1998

This years Grand Opportunities proved to be a great success. There was a good turnout with a great deal of interest in fly-fishing demonstrations. The children's fish pond kept many of the youngsters present, very busy. The BBQ was hosted by the Friends of the Grand and profits donated to FOGR. We would like to thank all volunteers, instructors, and organizers for a great job in this years format.

"Fly fishing the Grand River" donates...

Dr. Ian Martin and Dr. Jane Rutherford have put together another campaign for raising funds for FOGR. A limited quality of hard cover books have been made available to retail outlets. These signed hard cover editions are to be sold for $28.95 and for every book sold a donation of $5.00 is going to FOGR and our future efforts. Take a look at this book if you already haven’t.

PROJECT 2000

This project to study tourism and recreation on the Grand River in Center Wellington is now complete. The Project book 2000 is a resource document that can assist in preparation of action plans to ensure the well-being of the river as a tourist magnet. Funding was provided by the local municipalities as well as the provincial government.

The goals of the project are to strengthen stewardship and enjoyment of the Grand River watershed and to improve the well-being of life in that same area. While the current report completes the initial stage of the project, it is an evolving program and so it is important to recognize that reading through the report once will give you a current snapshot of the status of projects.

Troutfitter challenge

Grand River Troutfitters had a fly fishing contest on April 19, 1998. It was a cash prize for the winner with other subsidiary prizes for other events throughout the day. The winning team of the six teams that entered was Dave Whalley and Ken Collins. This event was successful and raised $300 for the FOGR this year and the event organizer (Steve May) believes next year will be a bigger event.
