Tree Plant 2011

  • Our tree plant will go ahead rain or shine Saturday May 14, meeting at the Wallenstein access on Hwy 86 a.k.a. Listowel Road, by 9:00. We’ll have a demonstration of proper planting techniques at that location sharp at 9:00 then move about 1 km up the road to the actual planting site, at 7509 Hwy 86. We should try to leave as many vehicles as possible at Wallenstein as there will be very limited parking at the farm. Mr. Bowman will have his tractor and wagon to shuttle Volunteers to the riverside planting site. By the way, Mrs. Bowman will have fresh maple syrup for sale onsite. CREW will be hosting a BBQ lunch, with burgers, ‘dogs, apples, pop and water available when all the trees are in.

To get to the Wallenstein Access Site, come up Highway 85 from KW through the St Jacobs traffic circle then left at the first traffic light, onto Hwy 86 / Listowel Road. Proceed about 3 km to the first stop sign. Turn left, remaining on Hwy 86 and continue about 1.5 km, through the village of Wallenstein and down the hill. The access site is on the right hand side, just before the bridge. There is parking for about 20 cars. Do not park on the highway!! To get to the tree planting site, come out of the access site parking lot and turn right across the bridge and continue about 1 km north to 7509 Hwy 86, on the right hand side, at the farm of our host Mr. Harvey Bowman. For emergency road rescue, call Archie McLarty at 519-771-2379.

We will have some shovels and buckets, but plan to bring your own favourite shovel, perhaps a bucket for watering trees, sturdy boots, gloves and be sure to dress for the day’s weather. I’ve ordered sunshine but be prepared for something wetter. Bring your energy, bring a friend, bring your family! Bring a camera to record the day, with your best pix to be featured on the FOGR website. Bring your fishing gear too and plan to spend the afternoon on the river because we’re also bringing in about 15,000 freshly stocked brown trout for your angling enjoyment!

If you can make it, please call Archie McLarty at 519-7517671 or email alt@quixnet.net by May 12 to provide a head count so we’ll be sure to have enough burgers.

    I’ll see you there!

  • Fish Stocking 2011

  • The Macton access is at the next bridge upstream from Wallenstein. From the Wallenstein site proceed northwest across the Conestogo River for about 2 km, through the “hamlet” of Macton (note the church with the tallest steeple in the area) and turn right at the flashing light, onto Wellington County Road 12, also known as Mansard Road. Continue about 1 km and the access site is just across the bridge on the left side. Again, please do not park on the road! There is a gravel parking lot for approximately 15 vehicles plus a garbage kiosk and interpretive sign. One of the features of this site is the array of close to 2000 trees planted since 2004 along both sides of the river and both upstream and downstream of the bridge, for a total of almost 1 km. This is the usual meeting site for Conestogo fish stocking.

A special thank you to golden.net for hosting the FOGR site.
